Scotland continued to dominate the competition after plenty more professionals joined in 1861. A total of 10 pros now entered the famous names among the Open Championship where it quickly became one of the most competitive tournaments in the sporting world.
The first Englishman to bring the trophy down south was in 1890 where John Ball was victorious over the 12 holes. Further down the line, the Open Championship continued to be dominated by UK amateurs and didn’t see its first international winner until 1907 where Frenchman Arnaud Massy was victorious at Royal Liverpool, Wirral.
By this time, the Harry Vardon era became a symbol of the Open Championship with him winning the competition six times – a record that still stands today. His wins from the first in 1896 and the last in 1914 became well-known across all the courses and won’t be found by another player anytime soon. The only current player to win as close to this record is Tiger Woods with three wins coming in 2000, 2005 and 2006.
The 2021 competition promises to be a thrilling encounter. The course is one of the most difficult courses that has ever played host in the Open Championship, with a lot of focus required as no two holes play in the same direction.
Plenty awareness of wind direction will also be a factor so this will need to be taken into consideration when striking the golf ball. The course is built on a series of natural dunes which adds to the challenge on the course based in Kent.
Pars here are at 70 over a difference of 7204 yards with all holes providing similar details throughout. The fourth hole is probably one of the most famous in Championship golf having hosted the deepest bunker!
