Golf Betting Strategy
There are various ways to bet on the golf, depending on your personal strategy. The rise in TV coverage in recent years has boosted the profile of the sport, increasing the market rapidly and bringing in new betting options. Here are some of the most common ways to bet and the top golf betting tips to try:
Golf Betting Tips For Tournament Betting
Betting on the winner of a Major is the obvious choice but it’s one that many experienced bettors avoid. This is because with so many variables it’s possible for a relative outsider to put on a storming performing and win. This makes it hard to predict, although it is a lot of fun.
Preferable options include betting on what players will make the cut or finish in the top five.
Betting on the Tour is a bit different as to win you’ll need to deliver a consistent performance over the course of many tournaments. This makes a fluke win far less likely, allowing bettors to more accurately predict the outcome.
Head-to-Head Betting Tips
If you don’t want to bet on the final position, you could place a bet based on how you think one golfer will do compared to another. If you think Rory McIlroy has got the jump on Dustin Johnson, place a bet for McIlroy to beat him over the tournament.
Head-to-head bets are a way of drawing on good knowledge of players who aren’t going to win the tournament. If you know your golfers well, you can use your expertise to great effect for this type of bet.
Versus the Field Bets
If there’s a player on a hot streak, you might find that the odds of him winning won’t deliver great returns. A more interesting proposition is to pick up a “versus the field” bet which relies on the named player losing - but it doesn’t matter who beats him. With these types of bet you’re banking on one of the others in the field managing to out-manoeuvre the chosen player. For the bet to pay out all you need is for the named player not to win.
Prop Bets
If you want to inject a little fun into your betting, pick up the golf tips relating to golf props. These are a group of bets which don’t rely on the winner of the tournament. Examples of potential prop bets include:
- Will there be any hole-in-ones in the 5th round?
- Will there be more or less than six bogeys on the 13th hole?
- Will the overall winner be over or under age 35?
You get the idea! Prop bets add extra interest to the overall outcome of a competition and are a fun addition alongside a regular tournament betting. Some take more skill while others rely on luck; if you’re serious about making a profit, choose a prop bet that involves skill.
The Main Events
There are two main tours for golfers: the European Tour and its US equivalent, the PGA Tour.
The European Tour is made up of 47 tournaments spread over a calendar year. The Tour begins in South Africa in November and finishes 12 months later in Dubai. During the Tour, the players compete to make it to top which is now known as The Race to Dubai. The top 15 players share a prize bonus pool of $7.5 million, with the overall winning scooping $1.5 million.
The PGA Tour runs from October to September and concludes with a series of four playoff events, known as the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The player who collects the most points during the playoffs will walk away with the first prize of $10 million.
As well as the two Tours, there are four Majors for golfers; these are prestigious events which offer the opportunity for players to make a real name for themselves. The Majors are:
- The US Masters is in the same location every year - Augusta National, Georgia - and takes place in April.
- The US Open is played in June and rotates between various locations known for their complex and challenging golf.
- The Open Championship, also known as the British Open, moves around venues in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland but always takes place on a coastal links course in July. This is the only Major to be held outside the US and the oldest of all the Majors.
- The US PGA Championship used to be held in August but has been moved to May. Another event which moves around many locations, it’s typically held on the east coast of the US, only very occasionally being held elsewhere.
The Tours and the Majors will be the focus for most golfing fans, with the latter commanding the most media attention. Knowing when the Majors are on and the structure of the Tours is essential for golf bettors to pick up the golfing betting tips in time for play.
