• Cheltenham 2019

If you are heading to the Cheltenham Festival next week, or simply catching the action on television, there are several fascinating match-ups that look set to make this year’s festival a vintage one. Followers of matched betting on this site will be aware that the Festival throws up some decent opportunities to make some profit, but there are some of the elite races and betting match-ups that are almost too close to call. Below are five of the most intriguing:

  • Buveur D’Air vs Apple’s Jade: Champion Hurdle, 12th March

Not only has the announcement that Apple’s Jade will likely contest the Champion Hurdle ignited interest in the Champion Hurdle, it has arguably also created a huge stir around the entire festival. For a bit of context, Buveur D’Air is the two-time champion, who looked to have no real competition in recent months. However, things changed the moment Gordon Elliott signalled he would aim his star mare at the Champion Hurdle. The bookies can’t choose between the two, with Betfair going 2/1 on both horses. However, with Laurina (4/1) potentially playing spoiler, we would recommend you get the best Cheltenham free bets 2019 from Free Bets UK before betting on what looks like the race of the Festival.

  • Presenting Percy vs Clan Des Obeaux: Cheltenham Gold Cup, 15th March

You could make a case for several horses in the Gold Cup, including last year’s winner Native River (6/1, Betfair). Indeed, with several top-class runners, it looks like very open-looking Gold Cup. However, there is a compelling argument that this will be a showdown between the 7/2 favourite Presenting Percy and the 9/2 second-favourite Clan Des Obeaux. Momentum really seems to favour the latter after Clan Des Obeaux followed up the King George VI Chase victory with a commanding performance last week in the Denman Chase.

  • Altior vs Min vs Footpad: Queen Mother Champion Chase, 13th March

In fairness, Altior has had no real rivals in racing over the last four years, so presenting Min or Footpad as a potential one seems like stretching it a bit far. Altior is priced as low as 4/11 with Bet365 to take his 18th consecutive win and his 4th title at the Cheltenham Festival. Betfair have given odds of 11/2 for Min and 10/1 Footpad to take the crown. They are both capable horses, but they will need to be at their very, very, best to challenge the imperious Altior.

  • Thistlecrack & Faugheen vs old age

    faugheen

If either of these horses win their respective races, (Thistlecrack should go in the Gold Cup, Faugheen in the Stayers’ Hurdle), you’ll hear the crowd cheering miles away. Two of the best and most popular horses we have seen this decade, but two who now face the tail-end of their careers. It would be remarkable if either wins their respective races at 11-year-old, although not impossible. Faugheen is as low as 5/1 for the Stayers’ Hurdle with Bet365, whereas William Hill go 16/1 on Thistlecrack for the Gold Cup. They have the quality, but do they have the legs?

  • The battle of elite trainers

The top trainer awards have belonged to Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott over the last few years, but Nicky Henderson looks in a strong position to break that Irish dominance. In fact, it’s really difficult to pick between the three, so it might be another one that suits matched betting. Betfair have priced Henderson and Elliott at 11/8, whereas Mullins is priced at 11/4. The latter looks a very savvy bet, given Willie Mullins stellar record over the last half dozen years, and his knack of surprising critics.
